Recreation and motor vehicle sub-group

The Local Access Forum has supported work by the Peak District National Park Authority and Derbyshire County Council to carry out a survey of all non-classified highway routes in Derbyshire.

So far 180 ‘other routes with public access’ have been assessed to check their condition - which accounts for more than half of all unsurfaced routes in the National Park.

The Local Access Forum has set up a sub-group which includes representatives of motor vehicle users, other users, landowners and conservationists. It is looking at each route on a case-by-case basis to determine the best way of managing them in the future.

Moss Road, TotleyWhere the long-term future of routes is in doubt the sub-group will recommend taking action using one or several of the following measures:

  • Physical improvements
  • Signs to alert users to what is and isn’t allowed on that route
  • Voluntary restraint on the use of the routes
  • Permit system to allow restricted use
  • Traffic Regulation Orders to legally control use of the routes

The sub-group's recommendations are made to the relevant highway authority. If the highway authority agrees it will carry out the work once the necessary funding is in place.
