Farm Visits: Where Does Our Food Come From?

Key Stage: 2

Location: Riding House Farm, Castleton or Beechenhill Farm, Ilam

Duration: Available as a half day

Why not combine a Farm Visit with our Rocks and Soils, Village Study (Castleton or Hartington) or Exploring My Sense of Place programmes?  Please contact us for further information

Farm Visits aim to take us back to basics as we take our food, and where it comes from, for granted.  A visit to a typical Peak District farm will encourage children to:

  • Understand where their food comes from and how it is produced
  • Make links between the products we buy and the sustainable management of the countryside and the Peak District National Park
  • Understand that landscapes are constantly changing and the role that farming plays in this
  • Think how climate change may affect our countryside and farming practices
  • Use simple fieldwork techniques to investigate the farmland and surrounding countryside

Learning Objectives:

Farm visits are excellent for providing cross-curricular connections between:

  • Sustainable development
  • Citizenship and PSHE
  • Geographical and scientific enquiry
  • Life processes, living things, humans and other animals
  • Contrasting landscapes
  • Food production
