Leadership Weekend for Young People

The National Park and the surroundings of Losehill Hall* provide an inspiring place for young people to develop their understanding of themselves and each other.  This was put to good use during a residential weekend hosted at Losehill Hall, run in partnership with SHEBEEN (Sheffield Black and Ethnic Minority Environmental Network), Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Police Service.

Leadership Skills

The Learning and Discovery Service from the Peak District national park worked with the young people from 7 different youth groups in Sheffield to develop their leadership skills and ways of managing conflict.  It provided an opportunity for 40 young people from diverse communities across some of the most deprived crime prone communities to work together to resolve conflicts through peer-to-peer learning, networking and exchanging experiences using the natural environment as a medium.

The young people were given an opportunity to look at land use conflicts from a real perspective during a visit to the North lees Estate and Stanage Edge. This was followed by workshops and self reflection where parallels in their own communities, and as individuals what roles they could play in conflict resolution now and in the future.

Other workshops and activities were organised around exploring self perceptions, similarities and differences between members of the group, young peoples perceptions of the police and policing, as well as discussions around conflict resolution and building consensus.

The group at the end of the weekend pledged to initiate a working dialogue by using various youth forums in the city to resolve conflicts and   help address causes of anti-social behaviour in their communities.

Many of the participants have gone on to take part in a variety of day activities in the Park and work placements in Sheffield arranged by SHEBEEN. This was the first of a series of such weekends and we have more planned.

Overall our experience has been surprising because it was better than expected.  We are also very proud of how we have bonded with everyone, and have  made friends to keep forever.’ Hasseena Hussain
