Sensitive routes

This information is intended to be advisory. The inclusion of any route where the status has yet to be determined does not mean you have a legal right to use it. If you are unsure please check with the highway authority.

The Roych

As part of the ongoing work to manage unsurfaced roads within the national park, a voluntary restraint request has been proposed to take effect from 1 March 2011

Voluntary One Way System (E-W) on Roych

Chapel Gate

The section of the route between Barber Booth, Edale to path junction North West of Rushup Edge is closed for repairs until 31 August 2011.  Updated restraint sign for closure (473KB) Adobe pdf document   

An experimental 18-month Traffic Regulation Order has been approved which will temporarily exclude trail-bikes, quad-bikes and 4x4s from the route.  The ban will come into force when the closure for repairs finishes at the end of August, and will then last for 18 months.

Longstone Edge

A site at Cross Ridge Dyke, 800 metres east of Bleaklow farm on Longstone Edge(SK 2256 7354) has been damaged by illegal off-roading. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and damage to it is an offence under the 1979 Ancient Monuments Act.

Signs such as those illustrated here are on site indicating the monument's exact location.

Voluntary Restraint - Minninglow/Gallowgate Lane

This restraint has now ended, thank you to all users who refrained from using this route over the winter and spring, vehicle use fell by almost 70% during the period and as a consequence the route has shown signs of improvement.

Abney and Abney Grange Restricted Byway

This route, between the top of Shatton Lane and Brough Lane/ Duper Lane (Grid Refs SK 191206-190202) is a restricted byway only and recreational vehicles are not allowed to use it. We thank the vast majority of users for respecting the legal status of this route, and will press for the small number of people who continue to use the route illegally to face the maximum penalty for such illegal use.

We are also concerned that a small number of people are driving illegally in the disused quarry adjacent to this route, use is being monitored and the police aware of when such use is taking place, again we will press for the maximum penalty for such illegal use.

Coombes Dale (Stoney Middleton)

(Grid Refs SK236751 - 207743) This route is a public footpath and use by recreational vehicles is illegal.

School Lane, Great Hucklow

Illegal use is still taking place in this area, and recently motorbikers drove through infants on their way to school causing the children distress. Police continue to monitor this location and if you have any information please contact them in strictest confidence on 0845 123 33 33. Parents have a voluntary code of conduct that they will not use vehicles on this lane throughout the day due to safety issues, and we would ask all responsible users to do the same if possible. Please therefore consider avoiding the use of this lane during weekdays.

Hartington Upper Quarter – Midshires Way to Whaley Bridge Restricted Byway 79

Peak Forest – The Cop (see photo)

North of The Cop this route links into a public bridleway which vehicles are not allowed to use.  Work is to be carried out to repair the worst damaged sections.

Hollinsclough – Washgates

This route is restricted in width to 4’6”. Vehicles of this width and more will not be able to use the route as it is too narrow.

We are aware that an incident took place on this route recently and have passed information onto the local police who are now closely monitoring the route.

Pilsley – Bradley Lane

Vehicle users are asked to respect the needs of local residents and drive responsibly through the village.

Taddington

We are grateful to all the vehicle users, who are adhering to the notices in the village. Local people have commended the attitude of users in respecting notices which has made a real difference to life in the village.

Totley Moor – Moss Road (see photo)

The Derbyshire section of this route is a public bridleway. Please do not use vehicles on this route. Use of this lane by illegal vehicles has, like many others, dropped by around 95%, we thank all responsible vehicle users for obeying the status of this route and avoiding its use. The pictures show how the lane looked and how it is now.

Winster – Restricted Byways 10 and 11

No vehicles are allowed to use these routes. We are aware that a number of motorbikes are illegally using these routes and have passed this information on to the police.
