06 July 2012National Park Authority adopts new Code of Conduct
The Peak District National Park Authority has adopted a new code of conduct for its members.
Along with all other local authorities, the national park authority was required to draw up a new code of conduct under the Government’s Localism Act 2011. In addition, local authorities were required to make new arrangements for dealing with complaints against members locally, following the Government’s abolition of the Standards Board for England.
The Authority’s new Code of Conduct sets out:
- standards of behaviour including honesty, integrity, objectivity, openness and accountability
- when a member must declare a pecuniary or personal and prejudicial interest
- when they must withdraw from discussions, debates or votes
- when gifts and hospitality must be notified to the monitoring officer.
After inviting applications and holding interviews, the Authority has appointed two independent people to be consulted on standards and complaints. They are solicitor Robert Ashworth of Alderley Edge and magistrate Joan Carr, of Stoke-on-Trent.
If someone believes a member has breached the code of conduct they may download a complaint form from the authority’s website or ask to be sent one by post.
Chair of the authority Cllr Tony Favell said: “We welcome the adoption of this code of conduct which not only complies with the requirements of the Localism Act, but goes above and beyond them. National parks have the highest level of protection, and we need to live up to the highest possible standards of conduct in order to do the best we can, not only for the national park but for the people who live and work here, and who visit it in their millions.”
