Cycling for health

Biking builds a better body

Regular cycling can help you to:

  • lose weight – cycling burns an average 500 calories an hour
  • build muscle-tone
  • exercise your heart, lungs, legs and brain – cycling 20 miles a week reduces the risk of coronary heart disease to half that of non-cyclists
  • recover strength and stamina after injury or illness
  • de-stress and feel better

Get started…

Try out cycling on:

  • the national park’s 65 miles (104.60km) of traffic-free trails, ideal for family cycling, with cycle hire centres at Parsley Hay, Ashbourne, Derwent or Middleton Top
  • White Peak Trails and Cycle Routes – 70 miles of relaxing cycling on trails and quiet country roads
  • the Trans Pennine Trail (external website, opens new window) along the Longdendale Valley in the north of the Peak District

…and carry on

If you hire a bike from one of our cycle hire centres you get a half-price voucher for up to nine people for your next visit.

But it doesn’t stop there

If you are a new or occasional cyclist and sign up to the Pedal Peak District website (external website, opens new window) you get encouragement and incentives to keep you cycling.

Once you have joined you get loads of information about cycling routes and opportunities near where you live, as well as places to get any support you need.

We’ll help you set yourself small, manageable goals and challenges to continue cycling. Every time you complete them you get entered into draws to win great prizes.
