Pedal Peak District - Project Updates

Pedal Peak District began in December 2009 and will run to March 2011.

Updates on the engineering will appear below.

Monsal Trail Cycle Route Works - January 2011

Why is the work happening?

Major engineering work is currently taking place along the Monsal Trail between Bakewell and Wyedale. The work is part of the £2.25m Pedal Peak District project and aims to give people the opportunity to experience parts of the Peak District that have been unavailable for many years.

We will be reopening four old railway tunnels which haven’t been open to the public since the railway closed in the late 1960s.

What work will be done?

Tunnel repairs have been completed and work is now needed to install lighting and resurface the route inside, and between, the tunnels.

Keeping safe

Contractors will ensure that public safety is maintained during the work. Please follow any warning signs and be aware that heavy machinery and contractor’s vehicles may be using parts of the trail.

Which tunnels are being reopened?

Chee Tor number one will be reopened as well as Headstone Tunnel, Litton Tunnel and Cressbrook Tunnel. All four are approximately 450m long and once restored will be open for cyclists, walkers and horse-riders to benefit from.

Will sections be closed?

We are not expecting any parts of the trail to close but diversions may be needed during the work. When this happens diversion routes will be signposted.

Please bear with us while the work is taking place to improve the route for the future. We will try to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.
