Monsal Trail Code of Conduct
The Monsal Trail has quickly become one of the most popular traffic-free routes in the Peak District attracting a wide range of visitors and users.
It is a privately-owned concessionary bridleway for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and no group has priority over another.
To ensure the Trail remains enjoyable for everyone please respect other users by following the code of conduct below:
All users
- Keep to the left
- Take all litter home with you
- Don’t pick flowers
- Don’t climb on railings
- Wherever possible use public transport to access the trail and minimise pressure on a sensitive environment
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the conditions
- Enjoy the trail!
Walkers
- Be aware tunnels are a strange environment for horses and shouts or loud noises can be frightening
- Keep left if you see or hear a bike or horse coming
- Keep dogs on short leads
- Please clean up after your dog
Cyclists
- Slow down when approaching walkers and horses; be aware you may need to stop
- Please keep your speed down and try to warn people of your approach
- Use a bell or call out when approaching others from behind
- Pass other users in single file
- Take particular care in the tunnels where the path is narrow
- If you’re going to be cycling after dusk, take front and rear lights

Horse riders
- Please keep to a walking pace and clear up after your horse
It is illegal for motor vehicles and motorcycles to use the route
