Fell Running

Fell running is a popular and well established activity in the Peak District. It may seem that walking up a hill is hard enough work without trying to do it as fast as possible, but there is a tremendous exhilaration to be gained from travelling fast and light on the fells.

It is also a sport that is very low cost to get into with the only real requirement being a decent pair of running shoes. There is a large calendar of events with something happening most weekends.

Classic races in the Peak District include the High Peak Marathon, a 42 mile night time navigation endurance challenge for teams of four. The route traverses the Derwent Watershed, starting and finishing at Edale, Derbyshire. Other testing classics include the Edale Skyline (21miles and at least 4,500 ft of climb) and the Marsden to Edale.

Nearly every well dressing in the Peak District has an accompanying fell race. These are often shorter and less strenuous events for which entries on the day are accepted, they include races such as Hope Wakes and Hathersage Gala.

Take the next step:

The Fell Runners Association is the controlling organisation of the sport and joining provides a comprehensive calendar of all fell races as well as information about safety and equipment, local clubs and how to get started. The Peak District enjoys an extensive public transport network, enabling you to explore new areas by getting a bus or train one way and running back.
