National Park traffic priorities set out in new SPITS plan

Priorities for curbing the negative impact of traffic on the Peak District National Park have been set out for the next decade with the publication of the new business plan for the South Pennines Transport Project.

A partnership comprising local authorities in and around the Peak District, the National Park Authority, and transport businesses has reviewed the existing South Pennines Integrated Transport Strategy, known as SPITS, to create a new approach to reflect changes occurring both to national transport policy and on the ground locally.

The new business plan sets out eight elements to the strategy:

1. Managing traffic to improve road safety and enhance the environment of the National Park
2. Managing and influencing the implementation of how road pricing may affect the traffic flows on the national park over the coming years.
3. The creation of a network of 'safe roads' for non-motorised users
4. Influencing people's travel behaviour to use the car less or in a more sustainable way, for example, by developing travel plans
5. Improving Trans-Pennine and local rail services serving the National Park
6. Improving long distance bus and coach services serving the National Park
7. Integration of public transport through improved marketing and ticketing, and
8. Improving the A628 trunk road - the major highway route across the South Pennines - where a bypass of the villages of Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle could be proposed by the Highways Agency in the New Year.

Addressing each of these issues will be the key to the success of the project. Being close to the large conurbations of northern England and the Midlands, the National Park Authority faces a challenging task in reducing the impact of transport on the Peak District National Park. Many millions of day visitors come into the area, most of who choose the car. On top of this there are many cross-Park car and HGV journeys as well.

Chris Bell, the Project Officer for the South Pennines Integrated Transport Strategy, said: "Within the plan, transport developments need to help both the environment and the economy."

This Business Plan can be viewed at the SPITS website www.spits.org.uk and replaces the previous SPITS Business Plan published in 2000.
