New bus service to reach Peak moors

A new Saturday bus service has just been launched linking walkers from both Glossop and Sheffield with high moorland areas of the Peak District, previously less accessible by public transport.

The service, introduced after discussions with Derbyshire County Council, has been jointly funded by Moors for the Future (a five-year, Heritage Lottery funded, project to restore a large section of eroded Peak District moors), and the High Peak and Hope Valley Transport Partnership, through their 'Local Links' transport grants scheme.

Dan Boys, Moor Care Ranger for the Moors for the Future partnership, said, "The new bus service is part of an initiative called 'Moors for All' which aims to develop easier access to the moorlands where possible and appropriate.

"The 373 service will run twice a day on Saturdays throughout the year in addition to the existing Sunday and Bank Holiday services, and will offer access to the Snake Pass and beyond, via connecting services. This will help reduce congestion in this area and benefit those without the use of a car."

The growing trend toward leisure activities means that people want to make use of the full weekend for their days out and the hope is that this service will enable people from places such as Ilkeston, Ripley, Alfreton, Derby, Sheffield, Manchester, Rochdale, Oldham, Huddersfield and Chesterfield to do so.

Les Watson, Public Transport Manager for Derbyshire County Council, added: "The Public Transport Unit has been delighted to work in partnership with Moors for the Future.

The financial support offered by the Project has enabled a gap in the County's public transport network to be filled. Now, in addition to the long established services on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, ramblers will now be able to access the high moorland around the Snake Pass on Saturdays throughout the year."

The morning service is being operated by Stagecoach East Midlands and the afternoon service is run by Hulleys of Baslow. Details of the service and other services into the Peak District are available on www.derbyshire.gov.uk/buses or traveline 0870 608 2 608.
