Call for new member of Peak District National Park Authority

Applications are being invited to become a member of the Peak District National Park Authority.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn MP is seeking nominations for a vacancy arising when former Authority chair Tony Hams completes his term as a member in March 2008.

The 30-strong membership is the ruling body of the National Park Authority, and this vacancy is among the eight Secretary of State-appointed members who have specialist regional or national experience in issues that affect the National Park.

The other members represent parish, county, district, city or borough councils in the National Park.

The successful candidate will understand the concept and practice of sustainable development, and applications are particularly encouraged from members of ethnic minorities, young people and disabled people.

The appointment will initially be for two, three or four years, with the option of re-appointment for a period of up to ten years.

Expenses and travel to meetings, along with an allowance, are payable to successful candidates. Members are expected to commit two to three days a month.

National Park Authorities work to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage within the Park’s boundaries and to help improve public understanding and enjoyment of the area.

The successful appointee will be expected to provide a national voice, and take a particular interest in strategic issues such as conservation, recreation, planning, access, land management and resource issues. All members are expected to reflect both local and national interests in their decision-making.

Application forms and further details can be obtained from: www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/appointments/index.htm  or  Rosalia Tramontana, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Block A, Spur 12, Government Buildings, Whittington Road, Worcester, WR5 2LQ;  tel no: 01905 768822;  e-mail: rosalia.tramontana@defra.gsi.gov.uk

Applications close on Monday, October 22.
