The top part of the historical ‘Stanage Pole’ has had to be removed today.
A spokesperson for the Peak District National Park said, “It is very regretful but the wood on the top half of the pole was rotten and therefore a health and safety risk to the public. We had no choice but to make the pole safe by cutting off the top part.”
The bottom part of the pole will remain and the top part will be placed into storage for safe keeping. The Stanage Pole is well loved by visitors to Stanage North Lees and we will take time to consider an appropriate replacement.
