Monsal Trail - Where is it?

How to find and use the Monsal Trail

The Monsal Trail is in the centre of the Peak District National Park, starting just north of Bakewell, 10 miles north of Matlock and 8 miles west of Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

There are many entrance points to the Monsal Trail along the route between Bakewell and Blackwell Mill at Chee Dale – see our map.

Wheelchair and mobility scooter users can access the trail through accessible ramps at Bakewell Station, Hassop Station, Great Longstone Station and Millers Dale Station.

Can I get there on public transport?

Bus services from Nottingham, Derby and Manchester operate along the A6, the nearest main road to the Monsal Trail, with stops at Bakewell town centre, Ashford in the Water, White Lodge, Taddington, Blackwell Turn and Wye Dale (limited service).

Other routes include services operating from Chesterfield and Sheffield to Bakewell and also to Buxton via Tideswell and Millers Dale. A limited service also operates to Monsal Head.

More information from:

The nearest train stations are at Buxton and Matlock but would require a bus journey to an access point.

Are more car parks going to be built?

There are no plans to extend existing car parks or build new ones. The aim is to encourage people to cut car use, reduce traffic congestion and use bicycles more. We would like more people to use their bicycles for travel to and from work, for shopping and for leisure without using their cars.

Where can I park?

Car parks are shown on the Monsal Trail map.

The most parking is in Bakewell where there are several pay and display car parks in the town and a small car park next to the Trail at Bakewell Station. Use postcode DE45 1BU to get the central Bakewell car parks.

There are also pay and display car parks at:

  • Hassop Station – next to the Trail
  • Monsal Head – a short but steep walk to the Trail
  • Tideswell Dale – about 1 mile from the Trail
  • Millers Dale – next to the Trail
  • Wyedale – a ten minute walk along a bridleway to the Trail.

Coaches can be parked at Bakewell's Agricultural Business Centre near the town centre and at Monsal Head car park.

Parking fees vary depending on location and length of stay so please bring at least £5 in coins to ensure you have the right change.
