Rocks and Soils

A journey back in time to the Carboniferous period of geological history. Pupils will categorise, and aim to identify, a selection of different local rocks through observations and testing rock properties. We will explore the rocks in the local landscape (possibly also visiting an old or working quarry site), searching for and understanding different ways that rocks are used, and seeking to identify the local rock type(s). Use of drama and hands-on investigations will enhance pupils' understanding of rock formation, properties, and uses. The programme is completed by exploring the wonder of soils, including learning about the formation of soil through a fun small-group activity.
